What Are Ear Seeds? A Beginner's Guide | Solstice Ear Seeds

What are ear seeds?

Ear seeds are small beads or seeds placed on specific points of the outer ear using adhesive, applying gentle, continuous pressure to support the body's nervous system and stress response. They are a non-invasive form of auriculotherapy rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, worn for three to five days at a time. Ear seeds are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. Individual results vary.

If you've seen tiny gold dots on someone's ear and wondered what they were, you've spotted ear seeds.

They look like jewelry. They work like acupressure.

Where the name comes from.

Traditionally, ear seeds came from the vaccaria plant, a small flowering herb. The seeds were harvested, dried, and shelled, then placed on the ear using tape to stimulate specific points. That's the origin of the name, and it's still how some practitioners use them today.

Modern ear seeds are usually made from materials like 24k gold, stainless steel, or crystal, attached to a small adhesive backing. The material is mostly aesthetic, what matters is the placement.

What are they made for?

Ear seeds are designed to apply ongoing pressure to points on the auricular microsystem, the framework that treats the outer ear as a map connected to different systems in the body. This concept comes from Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been studied and refined over decades, including by the World Health Organization, which formally recognized auriculotherapy and standardized 43 specific ear points.

By placing a seed on a specific point and pressing it periodically throughout the day, you create consistent stimulation without needles, appointments, or any disruption to your routine.

How are they different from acupuncture?

Acupuncture uses needles inserted into the skin. Ear seeds use gentle surface pressure instead, no needles, no piercing. They're often described as a needle-free entry point into the same therapeutic framework, which is why they appeal to people who are curious about auriculotherapy but hesitant about needles.

How long do you wear them?

Most people wear ear seeds for three to five days before removing and replacing them. During that time, the seeds stay in place through daily activities sleeping, working, exercising, even showering, providing continuous, pressure rather than a single treatment moment.

What can they support?

Ear seeds are most commonly used to support stress, sleep quality, focus, and physical tension. Each of these maps to a different point or set of points on the ear. For a full breakdown of the research behind each use case, the what are ear seeds used for guide covers it in depth.

Getting started.
