What Happens When You Put Pressure on the Right Points? A Look at the Research on Ear Seeds and Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the most common complaints in the modern world. Between 30 and 50 percent of people experience it in any given year — not occasionally, not once, but as a recurring, disruptive part of daily life. It affects how you move, how you sleep, how you show up. And for most people, the solutions on offer feel either invasive or temporary.

Auriculotherapy has been practiced for centuries. But what does the peer-reviewed research actually say?

A 2018 study published in Applied Nursing Research looked at exactly this question — specifically, whether stimulating precise points on the ear could create measurable change in adults living with chronic neck pain.

Here's what they found.

The Study

Researchers Shinae Lee and Hyojung Park conducted a single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial with 48 adults in South Korea who had been diagnosed with chronic neck pain.

The design was rigorous. Participants were split into two groups:

  • The experimental group (25 people) received auricular acupressure on specific acupoints associated with neck pain
  • The control group (23 people) received auricular acupressure on non-specific, unrelated points

Both groups received four weeks of intervention. Neither group knew which points were being used. Outcomes were measured three times: before the intervention began, at two weeks, and at the end of four weeks.

Researchers tracked four things: pain levels (via the visual analog scale), pain threshold, neck disability (via the neck disability index), and cervical range of motion — including flexion, extension, and rotation.

What Changed

By the end of four weeks, statistically significant differences had emerged between the two groups — but only in the experimental group receiving stimulation on the specific, targeted points.

Pain threshold improved (p = .003). Participants could tolerate more before registering pain — a sign that the nervous system was responding differently.

Neck disability decreased (p = .033). The neck disability index measures how much neck pain interferes with daily activities: reading, driving, lifting, sleeping, concentrating. The experimental group reported meaningful improvement in function.

Cervical range of motion increased — specifically flexion (p = .004) and left rotation (p = .004). These are two of the most commonly restricted movements in people with chronic neck tension.

The one area where no significant difference emerged was the visual analog scale — the subjective pain rating. This is worth noting. It doesn't mean participants weren't experiencing less pain. It may reflect the complex, variable nature of how chronic pain is perceived and reported, or the relatively short intervention window.

Why the Control Group Matters

The sham control design is what makes this study particularly meaningful. The control group wasn't doing nothing — they were receiving auricular acupressure on different points for the same duration. If the results were simply a placebo response, both groups would have improved similarly.

They didn't.

The improvements were specific to the group receiving stimulation on the correct auricular points. This suggests that location matters — that the ear is not simply a surface, but a map, and that precision in where you apply pressure changes what the body does in response.

What This Means for Ear Seeds

Auricular acupressure and ear seeds work through the same mechanism: sustained pressure on specific points of the auricle to stimulate the nervous system pathways that correspond to different regions and functions of the body.

The Lee and Park study used trained practitioners to apply pressure. Ear seeds allow that same targeted stimulation to continue between sessions — at home, throughout the day, for days at a time — because the seed stays in place. Specific points. Consistent stimulation. Cumulative effect.

The Takeaway

This study doesn't claim that auricular acupressure is a cure for neck pain. What it shows is that targeted stimulation of specific ear points — sustained over four weeks — led to measurable improvements in pain threshold, neck disability, and range of motion in people with chronic neck pain.

That's not anecdotal. That's a randomized controlled trial.
